Graphic video of ‘murder hornet’

By Ben Cost

Get your zap-rackets ready.

Just in case you thought giant Asian hornets that can kill people weren’t terrifying enough, a graphic video shows one of the flying terrors stinging a helpless mouse to death. The skin-crawling clip was first posted in 2018, but has since resurfaced amid the murder hornet scourge expected to sweep the US.

The nightmarish minute-and-a-half video, which currently boasts almost 500,000 views on YouTube, shows the orange-and-black brawler locked in a deadly embrace with a mouse on the road in an unknown country. The behemoth hornet, which is the world’s largest at over 2 inches long, eventually emerges the victor and flies away, leaving the poor rodent twitching on the pavement from its multiple stings.

Giant hornets, which reside in the forests of East Asia, have killed up to 50 people a year in Japan using a potent quarter-inch-long stinger that can dissolve human flesh.

Needless to say, the mouse murder video sent shivers down the internet’s collective spine.

“The streets ain’t safe out here,” said one stunned YouTube commenter of the invader.

“Who’s here after hearing about murder hornets entering the US?” asked one internet insectophobe, in reference to the hornet plague currently winging its way toward the East Coast.

Murder hornets are actually quite tasty — if they don’t eat you first
Indeed, after surfacing in Washington in December, the insect interlopers are projected to arrive in the next two to three years in New York, where beekeepers say they’ll inevitably wreak havoc on local hives.

Unlike their counterparts in Japan, who’ve learned to “cook” Asian giant hornets to death like a giant beehive hibachi, the US’ European honeybees haven’t evolved any defense mechanisms. As a result, a small squadron of hornets can clear out an entire nest in a matter of hours, as seen in this shocking video from Japan.

It’s not just bees that need to worry. The Asian hornet’s sting can damage human tissue and feels “like a hot nail being driven into my leg,” one Tokyo entomologist told Smithsonian Magazine.

Even worse, “the venom is like a magnet to other hornets,” according to retired New York Police Department beekeeper Anthony “Tony Bees” Planakis.

“The worst thing anyone can do with these things is kill them,” he recently told The Post, adding that “that scent is going to be airborne, and the rest of the hive will come.”

Continue to praise the good and call out the bad.

First let me make it clear that I do not agree with the opinion that the Covid-19 Pandemic is all a made up thing and not really a deal. Of course it is just like H1N1, SARS, MERs Ebola, etc Do I think that some folks are hyping this a little too much for political and ideological purposes…perhaps.Time will be the ultimate arbiter of that. The best example of that is the January travel ban by the president. At the time , he was derided and ridiculed for being racist and reactionary,,today it seems like that is the major reason we are not as hard hit as places like Italy and Iran who didn’t do that.I am not young and not particularly healthy…depending on who you ask…..I have no beef with the government or most companies on how they are responding and certainly not anybody in health care god bless them all….I am however an observer of human nature…. just like in every act of god we have visited on us…there will be people who show extreme acts of kindness and heroism and unfortunately some who will be horrendously selfish and even prey upon their fellow man….I will continue to call out both when I see them. I hope that everyone will do the same as I truly believe that doing so, especially on social media, is the best way to keep the exploiters in check and to encourage the best in our fellow man. Bad things most often happen in the dark and sunshine is the best disinfectant.

I Saw Your Blog……..

I Saw Your Blog……..

Dec 23, 2015

Those of us who regularly post to blogs understand what a frustrating experience blogging can often be. You try to produce relevant and engaging content. You strive to not be “salesy” or “self serving”. When you share your prose with say…coworkers , the response is often “ OK?” or “And this does what…?” The blank expression on the faces when you try to answer “ Why do you do this?”  fuels the little voice in the back of your head that keeps saying “NOBODY CARES!” . Then a miracle happens! Somebody you meet says. “ I read your blog. It was very interesting.”

Years ago when I started this , I said “This is really about me having an outlet for my creative side and I don’t really care if anybody else reads I or not.” If you go back to my first post, in 2007 , I actually said that. (or words to that effect) Five years later, I am still really doing this for me…….but it is nice when someone else reads what I have to say.

When I try to answer the why do you do this question, I reference my mother’s journalistic career. Mom worked at a small weekly newspaper before she married Dad and she is the one who infected me with the journalism bug. I wrote for the school papers in high school and college and at one point thought I wanted to be a writer. As my brother once said , “ You played football in school too , but you didn’t turn pro at that either.”

If someone you know writes one of these things, take a look at it and let them know you did. Oh and ….. if you happen to read this…drop me a note in the comments section.

The Power Of Buzz

Buzz Words Can Be A Powerful Tool…..But Apply With Caution!

Having spent most of my life in industries loaded with buzz words and acronyms (PRI, ISDN , VOIP , Cloud , SEO) I am still amazed at the power that these “buzzy” concepts can assert. I recently had that waking nightmare experience that we all dread. I walked into a breakfast meeting and was told , “You are giving the presentation today.” Its like the dream where you go to school and suddenly realize you are naked! Anybody who knows me would be surprised that the idea of speaking extemporaneously for ten minutes on ANYTHING would give me pause but it did…..a little.

Since I have recently been involved in some social media projects, I decided to go with that. Now sometimes when I start off talking about technology stuff, I notice that my audience will often get that eyes glazed , little drop of drool at the corner of the mouth look. NOT THIS TIME! Everybody was paying attention and at the end when it was time for questions the Q&A was longer than my allotted speaking time.

Afterward , I was asked to meet with someone at their office to talk about about how I could help them with a social media campaign…WOW!

The moral here is…..technology is all about driving the growth of business with better and innovative methods that deliver REAL returns. Often you can use “buzz words” to gain interest and engage your clients. Remember to be careful…set the proper expectations and ALWAYS deliver the goods.

Think Before You Upload!

Think Before You Upload!

I was reading about the apprehension of “the Alabama Tea Bagger” the guy who dangled his genitals over a passed out LSU fan in a New Orleans Krystal after the BCS Championship game in New Orleans. Honestly I am sort of torn about this whole thing……yes it was a stupid thing to do. Have I seen stupider things?….OOH YEA! I think the real question is, was anyone hurt? Was that passed out LSU guy damaged in some way? No not really. Brian Downing appears to be the one with most of the damage. He has lost his job, he’s been clapped in irons and dragged into the dark depths of Orleans Parrish jail , he has been publicly humiliated before his friends , family and the world. Most likely he will be tried and convicted of sexual battery. Here is the statute from Louisiana describing the offense and the punishment http://www.babcockpartners.com/resources/statutes/louisiana-sexual-battery-law which contains words like “hard labor” and “for the rest of his natural life”. Downing , if convicted , will serve some jail time and be permanently branded as a sex offender lumping him in with rapists and child molesters.  He will be electronically monitored forever and have to register where ever he goes.

When I read the legal parts I thought “OK that is what he did.” but I also thought it might be a little harsh for a crime of stupidity that left no one hurt. You can’t even make a case for the LSU guy being “psychically damaged or mentally scarred” HE WAS UNCONSCIOUS WHEN IT HAPPENED. Now did it disturb him when he saw the video on the web? Of course it did! “Oh my gosh , I got blasted and passed out in a Krystal and some Alabama guy dangled his business in my face!” Will the intoxicated LSU fan be OK? Aside from his other obvious self inflicted issues, yeah I think he’ll survive. Will he have some problems stemming from his involvement in this? Yes I believe he will. Would you want to be “that guy”? What do you think being “that guy” on your resume will do for you? Nothing good I’m sure.

Hopefully, Downing will be shown some compassion and cooler heads will prevail. Hopefully the LSU fan will use this and turn his life around. Certainly the furor will fade when “the next big thing” hits the web.

So why is this a big deal? Because it went viral on YouTube! All this havoc is only possible because of technology. Handy video on your smart phone, the internet and video sharing have all come together to destroy one poor stupid SOB and make another one the laughing stock of the world.

The moral of the story here is: Remember the enormous power you hold in your hand when you pull out your smart phone.Think before you upload that video boys and girls.
